Our previous landlord seems to want screw us

When we moved out of the house on Garfield it was rather quickly and the landlords said OK but asked that they send our deposit when the new tenants pay their first month rent. I say that because new tenants were moved in less than a week after we left. So it’s not like the landlords lost any money.
My husband has called several times during the past two months and has gotten an excuse each time. He called again tonight. He first introduced himself as normal and then immediately asked when we could expect to receive the payment. The landlord said that my husband had the wrong phone number. Countering my husband said no and that this was for the Garfield house.
Suddenly remembering who he was the landlord said this was a bad time as his wife, who is really the landlord, was out of the country and that we were to call back August 1 to arrange payment.
Sounds really fishing to us now so we have two weeks to prepare legal counsel. Hopefully this will be handled quietly. If not the landlords are in for one heck of a fight.
